Francesco Fontebasso (1707-69), St. Michael Expelling Lucifer

Fresco
Church of St. Raphael, Venice, Italy

As usual, Michael is dressed as a soldier, holding a sword in his right hand and a shield in his left as Lucifer and his companions fall toward the netherworld. (In the photograph, the long dark line that extends toward and past Lucifer is not part of the painting.) The Trinity above is pictured in the manner that was becoming standard in the West: the Father on the right, the Son with his cross on the left, and the Holy Spirit above and between in the form of a dove.

The artist's birth year is given on many websites as 1707, but the guide document provided by the church says 1709.
